Minecraft Enchantment Ordering Tool
Stop wasting dozens of experience levels on sequential anvil merges. Use our interactive Minecraft Enchantment Ordering Tool to compare naive one-by-one book combining against balanced binary tree pairing and eliminate the 40-level "Too Expensive!" survival cap.
Side-by-Side Comparison: Naive Sequential vs. Binary Tree Ordering
Why do so many survival players get locked out by the "Too Expensive!" anvil message when crafting 7-enchantment boots or swords? Below, our Minecraft Enchantment Ordering Tool simulates what happens if you apply your currently selected enchanted books sequentially one after another onto your gear, compared directly against the balanced binary tree above:
How the Minecraft Enchantment Ordering Tool Solves the 2^n - 1 Equation
In both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition 1.21, every item and enchanted book stores a hidden integer property named RepairCost (commonly called Prior Work Penalty or PWP). Whenever two items are merged on an anvil, the resulting item's work counter updates to max(Target_Uses, Sacrifice_Uses) + 1, and the anvil adds a penalty equal to (2^Target_Uses - 1) + (2^Sacrifice_Uses - 1) levels to the operation. Our Minecraft Enchantment Ordering Tool attacks both halves of the anvil cost equation simultaneously.
- Descending Multiplier Sorting (Left-Slot Priority): Every enchantment has a book multiplier ranging from ×1 (Protection, Sharpness, Efficiency, Unbreaking) to ×2 (Looting, Fortune, Mending, Wind Burst) and ×4 (Thorns, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Infinity, Silk Touch). Because the anvil only bills you for the enchantments sitting in the right-hand sacrifice slot, our binary anvil planner places your most expensive ×4 and ×2 books into the left-hand target slot first. Once Thorns III (12 levels) or Soul Speed III (12 levels) is in the left slot, you never pay its 12-level transfer fee again!
- Balanced Binary Bracket Pairing (1 + 2 + 4 Topology): If you drop seven books onto a pair of boots one by one, the boots pass through the anvil seven times, accumulating penalties of
0 + 1 + 3 + 7 + 15 + 31 + 63 = 120 extra levelsjust from prior work! Instead, the Minecraft Enchantment Ordering Tool groups your books into a balanced binary tree: Book 1 goes directly onto the item (n=1), Books 2 and 3 merge together (n=1) before joining the item (n=2), and Books 4, 5, 6, and 7 form a 4-book subtree (n=2) before the final merge (n=3). - Non-Linear Experience Curve Optimization: Because levels 1 through 16 cost far fewer XP orbs per level than levels 25 through 39, our sequence solver evaluates thousands of tree permutations in under 5 milliseconds to find the exact sequence that consumes the fewest raw experience points.
| Ordering Method | Final Item Anvil Uses (n) | Cumulative PWP Penalty Paid | 7-Book God Boots Total Cost | Survival Mode Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Naive Cheap-to-Expensive | 7 Uses (n = 7) | +120 Penalty Levels | 168 Levels (Step 7 = 75 Lvl) | ❌ Blocked at Step 6 (≥40 Lvl) |
| Naive Expensive-to-Cheap | 7 Uses (n = 7) | +120 Penalty Levels | 158 Levels (Step 7 = 65 Lvl) | ❌ Blocked at Step 6 (≥40 Lvl) |
| Unbalanced Pairwise | 4 Uses (n = 4) | +34 Penalty Levels | 74 Levels (Peak Step = 31 Lvl) | ⚠️ Possible, Wastes +480 XP |
| Optimal Binary Tree (Our Tool) | 3 Uses (n = 3) | +18 Penalty Levels | 59 Levels (Peak Step = 23 Lvl) | ✅ 100% Survival Safe |
Step-by-Step Book Multiplier Priority Guide for 1.21 Gear
When using the Minecraft Enchantment Ordering Tool to plan a custom villager trading haul, keep this book multiplier hierarchy in mind so you know which books belong at the top of your brackets:
- Tier S (×4 Book Multiplier — Cost 4 to 12 Levels): Thorns III (12), Soul Speed III (12), Swift Sneak III (12), Infinity (4), Silk Touch (4), and Channeling (4). Always anchor these in the left slot of a bracket or apply the single most expensive ×4 book to your raw item in Step 1.
- Tier A (×2 Book Multiplier — Cost 2 to 10 Levels): Impaling V (10), Breach IV (8), Looting III (6), Fortune III (6), Sweeping Edge III (6), Respiration III (6), Depth Strider III (6), Wind Burst III (6), Fire Aspect II (4), Punch II (4), Flame (2), Aqua Affinity (2), and Mending (2).
- Tier B (×1 Book Multiplier — Cost 3 to 5 Levels): Sharpness V (5), Smite V (5), Efficiency V (5), Power V (5), Density V (5), Protection IV (4), Feather Falling IV (4), Piercing IV (4), Unbreaking III (3), Loyalty III (3), and Quick Charge III (3).
Notice how Mending (cost 2) and Unbreaking III (cost 3) always appear at the tail end of right-slot merges inside the book pairing planner. Because their base level fees are tiny, they can absorb a +1 or +3 prior work penalty without pushing the combined step cost into high XP brackets.
Frequently Asked Questions (Binary Anvil Sequence Guide)
When you combine two Sharpness IV books on an anvil, the resulting Sharpness V book starts with n = 1 prior work use instead of n = 0. To prevent that pre-used book from inflating your weapon's final merge past 39 levels, pair it with another n = 1 composite book in our Minecraft Enchantment Ordering Tool rather than pairing it with a fresh n = 0 book.
Enchanting a clean Netherite Sword or Pickaxe at a Level 30 Enchanting Table gives you 2 to 3 max-level enchantments with 0 anvil prior uses (n = 0). Afterwards, uncheck the enchantments you already rolled in the anvil bracket calculator and only combine the remaining missing books. Your total anvil cost will drop by 40% to 60%!
No! Renaming an item at the exact same time as an anvil enchantment merge only adds +1 flat level and zero extra prior work uses. Never rename a finished 7-enchantment item by itself at the end, or you will pay the full 2^3 - 1 = 7 level penalty plus 1 level just for the name tag.
