Minecraft Enchantment Calculator
Instantly compute the mathematically optimal anvil combining order for any tool, weapon, or armor piece. Our Minecraft Enchantment Calculator minimizes total XP levels and prevents the dreaded 40-level "Too Expensive!" survival cap.
How to Use the Minecraft Enchantment Calculator in 3 Steps
Combining six or seven enchanted books onto a single piece of Netherite gear one by one is the fastest way to bankrupt your experience bar and brick your item. Because the anvil adds an exponential prior work penalty every time an item is modified, our Minecraft Enchantment Calculator solves the binary tree equation for you in milliseconds.
- Pick Your Equipment or Click a Preset: Choose from 15 equipment categories—including Sword, Pickaxe, Helmet, Chestplate, Leggings, Boots, Bow, Trident, or the new 1.21 Mace—or click a One-Click Max God Gear Preset at the top of the Minecraft Enchantment Calculator.
- Toggle Your Desired Enchantment Levels: Select the exact book levels you have collected from villager trading halls, enchanting tables, or trial chambers. Incompatible enchantments (such as Infinity vs. Mending, or Sharpness vs. Smite) are automatically filtered so your build is always 100% legal in vanilla survival.
- Follow the Numbered Anvil Tree: Read the generated cards from Step 1 to the final step. Notice how the Minecraft Enchantment Calculator pairs certain enchanted books with other books before touching your main weapon, keeping both total XP and maximum single-step level cost at their theoretical minimum.

Why Enchantment Order Matters: The Anvil Prior Work Penalty Formula
Every time you combine two items in an anvil, Minecraft increases a hidden NBT tag called RepairCost. If you drop seven books onto a Netherite Sword sequentially (Sword + Book 1, then Sword + Book 2, up to Book 7), the sword's work counter climbs from 0 to 6. By the sixth operation, the prior work penalty alone adds 31 extra levels before even counting the book cost! That is why seasoned survival players always run a Minecraft Enchantment Calculator before placing books into an anvil.
The anvil calculates each step using two simple rules:
- Rule 1 (Base Enchantment Value): Every enchantment has a book multiplier (from ×1 for common enchantments like Protection, Sharpness, and Efficiency up to ×4 for rare enchantments like Thorns, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, and Infinity). You multiply the enchantment's final level by its book multiplier.
- Rule 2 (Exponential Prior Work Penalty): Each item brings a penalty of
2^n - 1levels, wherenis the number of times that specific item or book has previously passed through an anvil. After the merge, the new item inheritsmax(n_target, n_sacrifice) + 1uses.
| Anvil Work Count (n) | Prior Work Penalty Formula (2^n - 1) | Extra Levels Added to Step | Survival Anvil Feasibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 Prior Uses (Fresh Item/Book) | 2^0 - 1 | +0 Levels | ✅ Optimal Starting State |
| 1 Prior Use | 2^1 - 1 | +1 Level | ✅ Very Cheap |
| 2 Prior Uses | 2^2 - 1 | +3 Levels | ✅ Ideal Balanced Tree Depth |
| 3 Prior Uses | 2^3 - 1 | +7 Levels | ✅ Safe for 7-Enchant God Gear |
| 4 Prior Uses | 2^4 - 1 | +15 Levels | ⚠️ Expensive (Requires Binary Pairing) |
| 5 Prior Uses | 2^5 - 1 | +31 Levels | ❌ High Risk of 40-Level Lockout |
| 6 Prior Uses | 2^6 - 1 | +63 Levels | ❌ Guaranteed "Too Expensive!" Block |
By grouping books into pairs—combining Book A + Book B (1 use), combining Book C + Book D (1 use), and then merging those two composite books (2 uses) before applying them to your equipment—our Minecraft Enchantment Calculator caps the maximum work count at 3 instead of 6. This single mathematical trick cuts your experience expenditure by more than 65%.
Best Enchantment Order Cheat Sheet for All Gear (Java & Bedrock 1.21)
Need a quick reference while standing next to your villager trading hall? We used our Minecraft Enchantment Calculator to pre-compute the lowest-XP anvil sequences for the most popular max-level survival gear loadouts. You can also explore dedicated calculators for Sword Enchantment Order, Armor Enchantment Order, and Pickaxe Enchantment Order.

Golden Rule of Ordering: Expensive Books First, Cheap Books Last
Why does the table above always place Thorns III (cost 12) or Soul Speed III (cost 12) in the left slot or early merge steps, while saving Mending (cost 2) and Unbreaking III (cost 3) for companion pairings? Whenever you combine Item A (left slot) and Item B (right sacrifice slot) on an anvil, you only pay the enchantment multiplier cost of Item B (the right slot)! Once an expensive enchantment like Thorns III or Looting III is already sitting on the target item or primary book in the left slot, you never pay its base enchantment fee again—only its prior work count. Our Minecraft Enchantment Calculator automatically orders every left-slot and right-slot placement to exploit this mechanic.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Minecraft Enchantment Calculator
In Minecraft, XP level scaling is non-linear: going from Level 0 to Level 15 requires only 315 XP points, whereas going from Level 15 to Level 30 requires 1,080 XP points. If you farm XP at an Enderman or Guardian grinder and replenish levels after each anvil click, optimizing for Least Total XP Points in the Minecraft Enchantment Calculator saves the most raw experience orbs. If you already have 80+ levels banked on your character and plan to perform all merges at once without recharging, choose Least Total Anvil Levels.
Boots and helmets have the highest enchantment density in the game (up to 7 enchantments including Thorns III and Soul Speed III). Never apply books one at a time. Load the Max God Boots preset in our enchanting sequence tool: it groups your 7 books into balanced pairs (1+2+4 binary tree), keeping the highest single anvil step at just 23 levels—16 levels below the 39-level survival limit.
Yes! We updated our enchantment multiplier engine for the Minecraft 1.21 Tricky Trials update. You can select the Mace in the item dropdown to calculate the exact anvil order for Density V (×1 book multiplier), Breach IV (×2 book multiplier), and Wind Burst III (×2 book multiplier) alongside Fire Aspect II, Unbreaking III, and Mending.
Combining two identical books adds +1 to that book's prior work penalty before you even put it on your sword. If possible, trade with a Librarian villager for max-level books directly. If you must combine lower-tier books first, switch our binary anvil planner optimization dropdown to Lowest Single-Step Level and check the Anvil XP Calculator to verify your final merge stays under 39 levels.
Yes! Placing an enchanted item into a Grindstone strips all non-curse enchantments and completely resets its hidden RepairCost counter back to 0. If you accidentally ruined a Netherite Sword by adding books in the wrong order, disenchant it on a Grindstone and re-enchant it step by step using our optimal enchantment tool.
Renaming an item adds only +1 flat level to the current anvil operation and does not add an extra step to the prior work counter when bundled with an enchantment merge. Always rename your weapon during the first or second step shown in the anvil order optimizer rather than renaming it as a separate solo operation at the end.
